GICANDI(THE FORGOTTEN RELIC)

Gicandi is a traditional musical instrument of the Agikuyu people made from a hollowed gourd filled with beads. The surface was often inscribed with cryptic markings, resembling Egyptian hieroglyphics in style and symbolism.Each mark told a story which was unique,yet understood by the poets.

Historically, poets used the gicandi in verbal duels-competitive exchanges of wit and wisdom. The victor would walk away with the opponent’s instrument, a mark of honour and mastery.

Unfortunately, many original gicandi were taken to Turin, Italy by Consolata missionaries, marking the decline of the tradition. Today, however, a small number of cultural enthusiasts among the Agikuyu people are working to keep the art of gicandi alive.
