Back in 1884, a wide-eyed British explorer named Joseph Thompson left England, dreaming of fame and glory. He wandered into British East Africa and beheld a mountain range so breathtaking it practically slapped the awe into him.
The Agĩkũyũ people had long named this majestic beast—Mũtambũrũko wa Nyandarua (Nyandarua Ranges) and Kĩrĩma kĩrĩ Thimbara (The Ever-Brooding Mountain). But Thompson, in true colonial fashion, assumed the mountains had no name. So what did he do? He slapped on a British label and named them after Lord Aberdare, the then-President of the Royal Geographical Society.
Fast forward over a century, and while we may not agree with Thompson’s naming antics, we do agree on one thing—the Aberdares are absolutely stunning!
This February, Aberdares Bongo Eco-Lodge offers you a chance to experience this untamed beauty firsthand-through Dare the Aberdares Hike. The Hike starts on 28th February in our Eco Lodge located at Gatare Forest, Murang’a. Its takes you through the scenic Elephant Peak, the grueling Buffalo Peak, the challenging Kinangop Peak and finally the daunting Satima Peak. If luck is on your side, you might spot the elusive mountain bongo—a rare and regal antelope that calls these heights home!
